REFRIGERATED CONTAINER STRUCTURE: INSPECTION AND REPAIR GUIDELINES
REFRIGERATED CONTAINER STRUCTURE: INSPECTION AND REPAIR GUIDELINES
Condition: Roof bulging due to over-foamed repair.
Action: No action unless 4mm above corner castings.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Repair with foam voids.
Action: Refoam and repatch.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Note: Do note open existing patches for inspection unless it is obvious from
tapping or pressing downward that the foam is missing. When the foam is
missing, repair by injecting foam. Do not remove the patch for refoaming
unless the riveting and sealing workmanship is unacceptable.
Condition: Riveted roof patch on welded MGSS reefer.
Action: Remove and replace with a welded MGSS patch.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Patch repair without removal of damaged material.
Action: If signs of water ingress, drain water from the interior and reseal patch.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Notes: For clarity, the photo shows the patch removed for inspection. Do not
remove the patch unless there are obvious signs of major damage under the
patch. Leave the patch in place and seal to prevent water entry. If there is a
foam void under the patch, inject foam to repair.
Notes: In cases of severe water ingress as shown above, it may not be possible
seal the patch with caulking. In this case, remove and replace the patches and drain
by drilling holes into the interior ceiling. Replace the foam only if it is water soaked.
Use matching corrugated material whenever possible.
Note: Full or partial roof sheet delamination does not require repair.
Condition: Side panel patch with hollow rivets.
Action: No action.
Condition: Mild steel rivets (note corrosion) used on aluminum patch.
Action: Replace with aluminum rivets.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Damaged rivets.
Action: No action.
Note: Replace damaged rivets only if the entire rivet head is missing.
Condition: Damaged rivet.
Action: No action.
Note: Replace damaged rivets only if the entire rivet head is missing.
Condition: Panel cut.
Action: Patch.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Multiple small patches close together.
Action: No action.
Note: There is no IICL requirement to combine patches that are close together.
Condition: Left hand patch has incorrect rivet pitch at the side post.
Action: If pitch is less than 40mm, no action. If greater than 40mm, add rivets.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Missing rivets.
Action: Replace missing rivets.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Hollow rivets.
Action: No action.
Condition: Damaged patch edge.
Action: Straighten and re-rivet or replace patch.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Patch does not cover entire damaged area.
Action: If patch fits flush at the edges, no action. If not flush at the edges, replace
with a larger patch.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Patch that is too small.
Action: No action.
Note: The minimum size of a patch is controlled by the IICL requirement that the
patch span the damage by 50mm on all edges.
Condition: A patch overlapping a patch.
Action: No action.
Note: Although this is bad practice, there is no IICL rule disallowing it.
Condition: Patch does not fully cover damage.
Action: No action.
Note: The patch should cover enough of the damage such that the fit-up,
workmanship, and water tightness are not compromised.
Condition: A patch overlapping a patch.
Action: No action.
Condition: Rivet pitch on right patch is excessive.
Action: If rivet pitch is less than 40mm, no action. If greater than 40mm, add rivets.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Multiple patches that do not fully cover the damage.
Action: If patches fit flush at the edges, no action. If not flush at edges, replace
patch(s).
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Incorrect color patch material.
Action: No action.
Condition: Patch over panel joint.
Action: No action.
Condition: Incorrect color patch material.
Action: No action.
Condition: Incorrect rivet pitch.
Action: If pitch is less than 40mm, no action. If greater than 40mm, add rivets. Do
not replace patch.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Panel joint rivets missing from patch.
Action: Add rivets.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Patch overlaps panel joint.
Action: No action.
Condition: Rivet pitch too large.
Action: If rivet pitch is less than 40mm, no action. If greater than 40mm, add rivets.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Panel joint rivets missing from patch.
Action: Add rivets.
Cost Allocation: Lessee account.
Condition: Underlay patch (patch inserted behind the original panel).
Action: No action.
Note: A patch that terminates at the top or bottom rail must follow the original
factory rivet pitch.
Note: A patch that terminates at a sidepost rivet line must be riveted on 25mm centers.
Condition: Caulking over rivet lines on side panel patch.
Action: No action.
Note: Caulking over rivet lines is only required on the roof.
